Key points:

Whilst reviewing portraits it had come to my attention that the most important feature is the subject’s eyes, as this is the way to show the most emotion, I will ensure the eyes are a main focus point. Furthermore, putting the images into black and white captures a dramatic atmosphere, perfect for a fashion shoot.

It is also very important to keep my subjects face lit well as when turning the images into black and white I could lose important details on the subject’s face.

I will ensure the image isn’t cluttered with things in the background, making the model the only focus.
To furthermore ensure the focus will be purely on the model I will use a shallow depth of field.

Richard Avedon – Vouge Magazine 

In these shots taken by Richard Avedon for vogue it seems he used the black and white affect to portray the beauty of movements, although the models aren’t shown doing the most graceful movements, or overly sexualized, they are captured having fun, dancing, just in the moment. with further research into this I have discovered Avedon was a very eccentric man who loved to preform, friends described him as a one man show. Avedon always maintained that in every picture he was photographing himself, this was the answer to why his models were also being photographed moving as he was a very energetic man.

Avedon was one of the first people to change the way fashion magazines shot their models.

Walker Evans - Let Us Now Praise Famous Men

This is a documentative photo story of individual farmers living on a dry hillside in Alabama, (1941) around the same time as the great depression.

The title of the series is from a biblical passage which was very fitting seen as it was hard times for a lot of people during this time.
From this photographer and this series I have got a better understanding of image composure for my model and how I will make the lighting come across as natural.
